Batteries must be removable

New guidelines from the EU Commission regulate the removability and replaceability of portable batteries and batteries for light means of transport. The text is relevant for the European Economic Area.

On 10.01.2025, the EU Commission published the “Commission guidelines to facilitate the harmonised application of provisions on the removability and replaceability of portable batteries and LMT batteries in Regulation (EU) 2023/1542”.

The guidelines are intended to apply the provisions on the removability and replaceability of portable and LV batteries under the EU Batteries Regulation and aim to implement Article 11 of the Batteries Regulation on the removability and replaceability of portable and LMT batteries. The text is relevant for the European Economic Area. The aim is to simplify the rules for portable and LMT batteries, which will apply from 2027. It addresses exemptions, safety and compatibility aspects as well as requirements for experts in order to promote more sustainable products and consumer friendliness.

The far-reaching changes are currently leading to numerous queries and uncertainty among sellers and producers.
