The market for e-bikes and e-scooters is growing and with it the need for standardised components. To date, there has been an unmanageable number of internal standards and documents from the producers of e-bikes (EPAC), e-scooters (PLEV) and rechargeable batteries/battery packs. This leads to problems with the maintenance, replacement and upgrading of batteries. Standardisation would provide consumers with considerable advantages in terms of compatibility and interchangeability, as batteries could be easily replaced and used in different models. Resource conservation, recyclability and environmental protection are also key issues here.
As reported by DIN e.V., the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) and the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE) have launched a project to standardise rechargeable batteries and battery packs in e-bikes and e-scooters. The aim is to create a VDE SPEC that specifies the connection and installation conditions and defines contact points, designations, dimensions and connection dimensions.
The kick-off is planned for July 2024. The aim is to develop and publish the standard within a year. The consortium is recruiting employees from affected stakeholders such as designers, producers, retailers, sellers, distribution in the warehouse industry, recycling companies and consumers.
The measure is in a similar vein to the recent demand for a standardised battery for DIY and professional tools (trade-e-bility reported) or the uniform charging cable standard for wired rechargeable mobile phones and similar technical devices such as tablets, eBook readers, digital cameras etc., which was recently passed by the German parliament.
