As reported by the European Council, it formally adopted the directive on corporate due diligence with regard to sustainability on 24 May 2024 as the final step in the decision-making process (trade-e-bility reported on the adoption of the EU Supply Chain Directive by the EU Parliament).
According to the Directive, companies are obliged to ensure that human rights and environmental standards are complied with throughout their entire value chain. In the event of violations, they must take appropriate measures to prevent, minimise or eliminate the negative impact on their own business, their subsidiaries and business partners in the value chain. Companies can be held liable for any damage caused and are obliged to provide full compensation. Affected companies must also develop and implement a plan to combat climate change in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement.
Once the Council has agreed to the European Parliament's position, the legal act is adopted. After being signed by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council, the directive is published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enters into force twenty days after publication.
