Greenwashing can have consequences

Companies should ensure that terms such as "climate-neutral", "sustainable" or "recyclable" are not used without appropriate evidence. Unauthorised statements can have legal consequences.

The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) reports that it has analysed the challenges for reliable environmental information as part of a research project and published the results in a report. This is intended to help companies avoid misleading environmental claims, known as greenwashing, and create transparency.

Important innovations for sellers and producers of products:

  1. Avoid misleading environmental claims: Companies should ensure that terms such as "climate-neutral", "sustainable" or "recyclable" are not used without appropriate evidence. Unauthorised statements can have legal consequences.

  2. Transparency and traceability: It is recommended to provide clear and verifiable information in order to increase the credibility of environmental claims. This promotes consumer confidence and protects against accusations of greenwashing.

  3. Adaptation to EU initiatives: The report serves as a contribution to current discussions on the EU initiatives "Empowering consumers for green transition" and "Green Claims". Companies should familiarise themselves with these initiatives and adapt their communication strategies accordingly.
