Standardised battery required

The European market is flooded with battery-powered DIY and professional tools whose batteries and charger connections can be used for other devices of the same brand, but not for devices of other brands. In the view of the ÖDP, this is harmful to users and the environment.

Now that the German Bundestag has approved a uniform charging cable standard for mobile phones, cameras and headphones, voices are being raised for the harmonisation of batteries and the compatibility of device batteries at European level.

The Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP), Düsseldorf and Lower Rhine region, is calling for the Europe-wide harmonisation of batteries and chargers for environmental and consumer protection reasons: "Although many of these batteries have a standard voltage of 18 volts or 36 volts, they are often not compatible with devices of other brands due to manufacturer-specific connections," says Jeyaratnam Caniceus, European candidate and parliamentary group leader of the ÖDP in Kempen, with the support of ÖDP MEP Manuela Ripa.

According to the report, the European market is flooded with battery-powered DIY and professional tools whose batteries and charger connections are harmonised within their own brands and can therefore be used for other devices of their own brand, but not for devices of other brands. This is detrimental to users and the environment.
